One thing you can say about the title race now is that anything is possible. The Bulldogs are just thankful to be a part of it.
Devaugntah Williams scored 10 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter and Mike Mills also poured in 13 on Friday to lead McKinley to a 55-47 boys high school basketball victory over Lake. The Bulldogs (9-7, 7-4) won their fifth game in a row and kept control of their league title destiny in their hands.
They will earn a share of the championship if they beat GlenOak next Friday.
“We’ve been to the bottom of the ocean and now we’re on cloud nine,” McKinley head coach Keith Noftz said.
The best the Bulldogs can hope for is a share of the title.
The Perry Panthers wrapped up a piece of it Friday with a victory over GlenOak in their final league game. The winner of next week’s Lake-Jackson game also will earn a share of it.
McKinley won’t complain. On Jan. 20, the Bulldogs were 4-7 overall, 3-4 in the league, and three games out of first place.
It has been a long climb back.
“It has been real hard, but we’ve been working together and becoming a family,” Mills said. “... We always knew we were a really good team. We just didn’t play like it at first.”
The Bulldogs looked like a real good team against the Blue Streaks, who were knocked out of first place for the first time this season.
Hollis Alexander hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points. Da’Vontai Rorie grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and scored eight points. Mills also grabbed six rebounds. Tyler Trammell scored eight points off the bench.
How the Bulldogs have turned their season around is clearly evident to Noftz
“We’ve been very, very unselfish,” he said. “And I’ve been saying this for three weeks, the play of our post players, Rorie, Trammell, Mills ... Mills is becoming a force in the league, which is where he needs to be.”
Mills and Williams combined for all but two of McKinley’s 17 fourth-quarter points. A decisive moment came with 1:12 left when Mills converted a layup as he was fouled and hit the free throw to increase the Bulldogs’ lead to 50-44. Four straight free throws by Williams in the final minute game them a nine-point lead, their biggest of the night.
